Is Patton Emotionally Stressed?

limitededitionsanderssidesblog:

Now I was thinking about Patton’s character and thought over something: if Patton is the embodiment of emotions, does he get emotionally strained? throughout the Sanders Sides series, Patton is only ever shown to portray a small amount of different emotion, the major ones being happiness and, as of Season Two, sadness. But the human spectrum of emotions is so much more vast, as detailed in this graph:

Let’s take a look at these moments from MOVING ON Part 2: Dealing With a Breakup

He Feels He Isn’t Listened To. We all know the theories about Logan and Roman feeling like they are ignored by the other sides, but what about Patton? As I was re-watching the Sanders Sides videos for evidence I found that the other sides often times don’t take him seriously and ignore his input. Take a look at the dialogue from Season 1 Episode 13- Growing Up:

Logan: “Morality, you are the issue here.” “You stand there making your puns and are just needlessly silly, all the time.”

Roman: “You are holding Thomas back!” “We need actual contributions from you every now and then.” “Perhaps it’s best you stick to knowing the difference between right and wrong, and leaving the rest to us.”

Virgil: “His heart’s just not in the right place.”

For the entire middle section of this video Patton is being ridiculed for how he feels and how he does his job. Just look at the face he makes when the others don’t seem to need him.

He looks genuinely down trodden. Even when the others later accepted his input later in the video, the others still appear hesitant to follow his advice or listen to him in later episodes, especially in the very next video. If the others won’t even listen to his ideas, then why would they want to know how he feels?

Patton Can’t Control / Doesn’t Understand His Own Feelings. Okay, going through all of the videos I noticed something that Patton CONSTANTLY did: quickly hiding his reactions to different things. It didn’t matter if he showed signs of being sad or angry, if he didn’t look happy for whatever reason he would quickly put on a smile, crack a joke, or act silly.

MOVING ON Part ½: exploring Nostalgia

Patton also seems to back track out of things he says or does whenever he realizes he’s being nonsensical.

image
image

Patton doesn’t really seem to be very confident in himself or his thoughts. This may be backed up by him constantly being told by the others that he’s overly silly and not being taken seriously.

Have you ever noticed how much Patton clings to Logan? It’s Obvious that he sees Logan as the perfect example as what he should be like, calm, collected, and in control of his emotions. He even called Logan “grounded”. Remember this moment from Making Some Changes!?

image

Besides the Logicality factor of this moment I always wondered why Patton wanted to talk to Logan more. Like, why Logan? Surely if Patton really wanted to talk about his feelings and problems then he’d turn to Roman since he’s the only other side on the right of the brain. But then I remembered this from the previous episode Growing Up

image

I know Patton is eccentric, but doesn’t he seem a little too eager? And note how he reacts when no one wants to talk.

image

He’s stammering and appearing to be hugging himself, both signs that he’s nervous and put off. Again, no one cares about how he feels. So if he can’t share his feelings, might as well bottle it in. Such as he was told by Logan himself three episodes earlier in My Personality Q&A: “That’s one of those outbursts we internalize.“

Patton Is Split Between What is Morally Right And Wrong. Bringing it back to his roots, Patton was always Morality at his core, but what does this mean? Well the definition of morality is principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. In society there have always been a contradicting belief in two different things. It should be okay for people to share their feelings. You should be doing fine all the time without the need to seek help. I often see these two ideas in life and scoff at the irony, but imagine that this is what Patton has been based on, that would mean that the core of his being is always fighting with each other. So how would he find a solution for this internal war? By giving discreet signals that he’s not okay.

A lot of these moments appear like him being silly in passing, but when you really look at them they seem to be him letting his emotions go, even if just for a short while.

So, now that we’ve established Patton’s insecurities and inner debate, how does this change him? Well this may be the reason why he’s so flamboyant, his emotions are constantly changing, while at the same time he’s trying to keep them contained and filtered for only the ‘nice’ emotions. But what if this constant containment emotionally exhausts him to the point where he needs to be able to let all of his emotions come to light. “Why does Tumblr romanticize Hades so much?”

Idk Clarice, maybe we’re just tired, and life is uncertain, and we like the idea of a stable husband with a steady job and a big dog and his own place away from all the loud, shapeshifting-kink party gods.

What’s not to romanticize?

@allidrawscomics, @crazyforgreekmythology

Why do people normally romanticize Zeus, Apollo, and Poseidon when those guys are all pretty clearly rapists? Why were women encouraged to be June brides (the month named for Hera’s Roman counterpart) when she probably had the unhappiest marriage in the entire pantheon with a super unfaithful husband? Why do people call Perseus a hero for killing the gorgon Medusa, when her only crime was getting raped by Poseidon before being turned into a monster?

Hades got the underworld by drawing the short straw with his brothers. He’s grim because he was given the world of the dead when he could have had the land or the sea. He made a river where people could forget their unhappy lives and rest in peace, he gave a living guy the chance to bring his dead wife back if he could only follow simple instructions, and unlike pretty much all the other gods there isn’t really a story about his hubris making him lash out at people.

In the Hymn to Demeter where the story of Persephone is found, Hades goes to Zeus first to arrange things. Zeus gives him his blessing to marry his daughter and even helps him scheme how to go about nabbing her since her overprotective mother would never agree to letting her daughter marry anybody. Once he’s got Persephone in his own realm he treats her with nothing but kindness and offers to make her his queen, promising her that she will be respected as such.

Disney warped Greek mythology to put up a hero story. They glorified Hercules, who totally WASN’T a bastard child who killed his children in a fit of insanity due to Hera’s jealous spite, and had Hades play the deal brokering devil. I got to grow up with kids who thought that’s what his myth was about. If popular media gets to spin Greek mythology to make it more palatable then SO CAN WE.

So wrap that in a grape leaf and suck it.

Moments after @rheabutcher banned me from cutting butternut squash bc it’s “too dangerous.”

This is the “you need to boil the water for instant noodles” couple. Who’s going to volunteer and teach them how to cook safely and and efficiently?

Me, walking up to a gay couple: so which one of you tries to heat up noodles without adding water and which one of you breaks out the toolbox to slice vegetables?

Every child I know under the age of 10 is unbelievably chill about gender and tbh I’m jealous

Me, teaching a pagan kids class: “A lot of people think that the deity Loki might be genderfluid, do any of you know what genderfluid means?”

8 year old, rolling his eyes like that’s the stupidest question he’s ever heard: “Everyone knows what genderfluid means”

Little sister: *walks into the kitchen looking incredibly masc*

Me: “Nice outfit, a lot of afab folks have to work really hard to look that masculine.”

Little sister: *takes headphones halfway off and gives me a blank stare* “Why? Is clothing gendered or something?”

Me: “No, but a lot of people will assume things about your gender based on your clothing”

Little sister: *Puting her headphones back on as she walks away* “Oh, cool I guess.”

9 year old that I babysit sometimes: “What’s that flag on your shirt?”

Me: “It’s the nonbinary flag. It means that I’m not a boy or a girl.”

9 year old: “I know what it means, have like 5 nonbinary friends, duh.”

I’m fucking begging the terfs in my notes to read literally anything about children’s gender development.

“It’s because kids aren’t old enough to know that gender is based on sex” Buddy two-year-olds can distinguish people based on secondary sex characteristics, the cis-binary view of gender isn’t hard to grasp. It actually takes children until about age 6-7 for their ideas about gender to be less based on gender stereotypes and more on their individual experience with gender, and for them to recognize and respect gender variant people. So like the fact that y’all’s idea of gender never got past the complexity of a toddlers is not my fault or my problem.

Also, I know very few parents who actually enforce trans and nonbinary acceptance with their children. The majority of kids are still being told by their parents that “boys have penises and girls have vaginas” it’s just that most kids today have enough gender-variant friends, caretakers, and tv role models, to establish individually that that is false and that gender is more complex than that. This isn’t evil trans people brainwashing your children, this is intelligent children developing critical thinking skills and coming to their own conclusions.
