People who say “money can’t buy friendship” aren’t considering you can buy a dog.

WHY BUY A DOG WHEN YOU CAN ADOPT ONE?? IF YOU RESCUE ONE FROM THE STREETS IT’S FREE.

Right, adopt don’t shop. Buying pets is rather bad, but don’t assume that you can just adopt or rescue for free. There are adoption fees (to keep the shelter running), license fees (because you can’t just have a dog, it has to be licensed), spay/neuter fees, vaccines, heartworm medicine, flea and tick treatment, toys, puppy pads (if not housebroken), leashes, collars, dog shampoo, food, vet visits, and anything that needs to be replaced within the first year or so of training. To presume that you can just “have a free dog” is rather silly. There are many costs to having a dog that build up quickly. If you end up just rescuing a dog and assuming that you have no money worries, you and the pup are going to end up suffering.

One, what even is a “dog license”?? Two, obviously you assume everyone wants a puppy. I would much rather have an older dog. Three, obviously there’s vet bills and adoption fees if you go to a shelter, but there’s always the huuuuge possibility you would find a stray dog in your backyard or something? There’s still vet bills yeah but I mean not all adoptable dogs come from the shelter.

http://www.licenseyourdogpa.pa.gov/files/licenseyourdog.aspx

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog_licence?wprov=sfla1

Dog licenses prove your ownership of that particular dog. You can’t have a dog, it needs to be registered in case it gets lost, bites someone, etc.

And I’m not assuming that every dog from the shelter that will be adopted will be a puppy.

  • The puppy pads were an example of things to buy for a new dog
  • Puppy pads can be used for older dogs. My older dog had bladder issues towards the end of its life and needed them.

While not all dogs come from a shelter, there are still adoption fees. You take whatever animal you rescued to the nearest shelter to properly adopt it. You can’t just take in a stray and say it’s yours.

https://www.cesarsway.com/get-involved/helping-a-lost-stray-dog/what-to-do-if-you-find-a-stray-dog

So it’s not free to adopt a stray dog from the streets, that’s not how it works.

I have literally never had a “dog license”. The only tags any of my animals have ever had to wear is their rabies tags from the vet. And I’ve had several dogs and a few cats that I’ve taken in as strays, and never had to take them to a shelter to “adopt” them. I just don’t understand why I would have to go through all of that??

You can’t just have a dog in your possession. You need to have it registered in some form (i.e. dog license). What if the dog catcher comes around and your dog isn’t registered? Or if your dog is lost and they don’t know if the dog currently has a home. There is microchipping for dogs, but that assumes that whatever information is on it is up to date. It could be that Owner A microchips the dog, dumps them, dog gets picked up, microchips says that Owner A is the one that owns the dog even though they dumped them and no longer own them. The dog license keeps the owner and information correct and current.

You also can’t just grab dogs off the street and take them in. The dog might be just lost or may been in serious trouble. You take the dog to the shelter so the shelter can look and see if there are any current owners (via microchip and license). If there aren’t and they deem you fit enough to own the dog and the dog worthy of being owned (the dog maybe feral and need special treatment and therefore can’t be owned), then you can complete the paperwork for the dog.

https://www.rover.com/blog/how-to-help-a-stray-dog/

Also, it’s typically the law to take any strays you find to the shelter. You have to look and see if there is an owner and you have to complete paperwork saying you have taken all legal steps to owning the dog.

Listen, I’ve lived in the middle of nowhere my whole life. For one thing, there’s no “dog catcher”. Strays that aren’t brought in just roam around stealing food and maybe killing a chicken if it can get one. Also, if some dog I’ve never seen just shows up (aka no one of the neighbors dogs or one of the usual strays) you can bet that someone did a dump-and-drive and that it needs to be taken in. And no one really microchips unless it’s someone more well off and they have some full-breed lap dog. Most people where I come from legit believe microchips are “a sign of the Beast/End times” 😒

who wants to hear the story about how a girl in my spanish 2 class fought back against the horrible spanish teacher and won

if this gets 2 notes i will tell it

one note is good enough for me.

so there’s this girl in my spanish 2 class. we’ll call her kayla.

kayla is a sophomore. she is funny and outspoken and a little crazy. the main thing to remember about kayla is that she will stand up for herself when needed. and that’s why something happened with her and my spanish teacher.

we’ll call my teacher miss irving. miss irving has been teaching spanish for 30 years. she’s a little forceful, hates technology, and hates when people don’t just listen to her without questioning it.

it began when kayla entered class late near the beginning of the school year. “sorry, ma’am,” she said to miss irving. “i was at the counselor’s.”

miss irving looked up at kayla and asked for a pass. kayla didn’t have one, but she said that miss irving would be able to call the counselor and the counselor would verify her visit. miss irving refused to do so and gave her detention on the spot. kayla started trying to justify her own actions, and she received yet another detention.

this marked the beginning of a long, long feud. every time kayla did something, miss irving would reprimand her for it. kayla put on chapstick or began to eat in class and miss irving began to yell. kayla read a paragraph slower than the rest of us and miss irving would snap at her. slowly, kayla began to get fed up.

the last straw for her was when she asked miss irving to go to the counselor during class, and it changed everything.

“miss irving? i have an appointment with the counselor down the hall. may i go?”

“obviously not,” my teacher snapped back. “you can’t leave in the middle of the class.”

“but i need to see her, i have an appointme-“

“i don’t care. you’re going to translate that paragraph-“

“ma’am, i already translated it-“

“well, then i’ll give you more work to do-“

“no.”

at that word, all of the heads in the clasroom turned. it’s an unspoken rule that you don’t say no to miss irving. but kayla had fire in her voice, and was now standing up and glaring at the teacher.

“excuse me?” miss irving responded, and kayla went off.

“no matter what i do, you get on to me about it. i have issues that i need to take care of that you refuse to understand. you’re a teacher. you’re supposed to care about us. it’s your job! listen to me carefully: i. have. mental. health. problems. and there are times i need to eat in class or i need to go to the counselor’s office because of it, so could you just get off of my ass about it and try to understand?”

miss irving turned beet red and sent her to the principal’s office.

what followed was a battle between the two. miss irving kept emailing kayla’s parents, but kayla’s parents took their daughter’s side. then my teacher emailed kayla’s other teachers and asked them to take her side, but the other teachers said they didn’t ever have problems with kayla.

kayla went to talk to the principal about the situation and told her what was going on. the principal talked to miss irving, and miss irving lost her teacher of the year award for that year. she also received a strike on her teaching record for refusing to respect a student’s mental health protocol. and kayla won.

miss irving still teaches our class and we still have kayla with us. now, miss irving doesn’t hide her hatred for kayla at all. she expresses it fully to her other classes. and most of those other classes hate her as well.

but my class and i love kayla. because kayla has a newfound power, and she doesn’t take it for granted. instead, she uses it to help us.

and this matters so much to me because, one day, she helped me.

i have generalized anxiety disorder. one of the methods i can use to calm myself down is by doodling, and doodling also helps me listen more closely to the teacher’s lesson. so i started doodling on the edges of my papers in spanish a lot, especially when we started having tests every class period and it became very anxiety-inducing for me.

miss irving started taking points off for every doodle i made. and i mean A LOT of points. i drew an eye in the corner of a worksheet once and i got an 80 instead of a 100. when i tried to explain that it was for my anxiety, she didn’t care. so now i had even more anxiety because i couldn’t reduce my anxiety.

one day, miss irving was lecturing and i was doodling, when she started to yell at me for it.

i can’t remember a lot about what happened because at that moment i went into a full blown panic attack. but what i do remember is kayla standing up and yelling at her.

“what are you doing? stop! she’s obviously having a panic attack!”

she came over to my desk and led me through breathing exercises. calmed me down. told me my doodle of half a face looked really good, asked me how long i’d been taking art and about my disorder. the entire class was silent, watching, and miss irving was fuming.

when i was calm enough to, i thanked kayla, and she squeezed my hand in a silent alliance.

then miss irving walked back to the whiteboard and never said anything about my doodles again.

the moral of the story? just because a teacher or principal or parent is older than you doesn’t mean they deserve to be obeyed no matter what. if what your “elders” say to you or do to you belittles you, tears you down, or keeps you from being able to get help or be a better person, they are not doing their job, and you can stand up for yourself and others.

don’t be afraid to question the authority just because they say they shouldn’t be questioned.

Kayla’s a fucking hero

I love how in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve and Bucky are having their dramatic highway battle and the cars in the other lane just keep driving. Like, the regular people in the Marvel Cinematic Universe must be so jaded at this point. Like, “Ho hum. Another Monday. Aw dangit. Looks like they’re at it again. The five o’clock rush is gonna be hell.”

Various twitter accounts just like:

So-called superheroes making me late to work again. Are they gonna employ me when I get fired for their incompetence? 🖕

THINK I SAW CAP AMERICA ON HWY 95 BRIDGE 🇺🇸❤️

No one at work believes I was late because I missed my turn due to “enormous bird man.”
#cantmakethisshitup

Captain America vs SHIELD secret police have shootout on freeway in DC. What are they not telling us?

Dropped my snack in floorboard bc some metal arm dude flew off this car & into the gd road. Skittles everywhere.

Which Avenger has a metal arm? #newfave 💋

Think I saw Cap A out of costume & still fighting shit. Either that or some kids have taken LARPing too far.

Is there an Avengers with wings? Seriously. This is important.

Pray for those caught in #Hwy95 incident. Bus overturned. Potential Avengers situation. 🙏

Ridding the world of evil? What about the evil of making a girl late to her lunch date? Smh

Got bullet holes in my car today, but it also shielded black widow so like thank you ma’am. It’s been an honor.

Okay I already reblogged the original, but this ‘twitter’ post has me crying, so I have to reblog it too. Lmfao!

Which avenger has a metal arm? #new fave

As a former resident of the NOVA/DC area I can honestly say that people driving around this super battle on I-95 was one of the most realistic things about that movie

i still can’t believe that the incredibles is likely set in the 1960s

the entire film is designed with classic 50s-60s art styles, a lot of the interior design of the parr household is in 60s style, fashion is generally reminiscent of the 60s, in the beginning of the film all the photographs and video are grainy and shot in 60s style, the technology in bob’s office is very dated, when edna is going on her “no capes” rant she cites superheroes who died from cape designs and says their deaths were in the 50s, all the cars in the film have 60s models, any advanced tech we really see is seemingly kept secret from the general public, here’s a newspaper from the film:

may 16th, 1962

some people are saying that the technology on bob’s desk was too advanced for the 1960s but not really, in the 60s computers DID exist they were just big and bulky and small screened, which matches bob’s:

you could argue that some of the fashion isn’t very realistic to the 60s as some of the women wear pants, but women did wear pants in the 60s even if it wasn’t common. as for the mens fashion, it’s kinda spot on. the business suits with short sleeved button ups and skinny black ties, the turtlenecks, and for more dressed down looks wearing a t-shirt and jeans isn’t very unrealistic (and that little boy on the red tricycle, wearing a baseball cap, and chewing bubble gum is like classic 60s imagery)

some outfits were likely oversights and/or them not wanting the time period to be too glaring. the sequel looks like they’re going to be making the womens wardrobe fit the stereotypical 60s timeframe better, as you can see in the trailer:

the writer and director of the incredibles has even said that he based the film on classic 60s superheroes and comics like god guys please use google search, why would i lie about this

Also in the original version of Syndrome meeting the kids he didn’t say the “Busy” line he says “I didn’t think they let you guys breed?!” Which, aside from being incredibly dark all on its own, suggests that America took fascist measures to control the populace of superhumans, making Bob’s struggle to keep the family hidden and everyone’s elation at Jack Jack not having powers utterly depressing ALSO the age of Violet puts the prologue scene somewhere in the 40s which forces the viewer to consider two possibilities, one that World War 2 never happened because of the existence of superheroes in America as a deterrent or two that superheroes were created by America as a weapon for use in the second world war

For anyone not so familiar with cat behavior, this cat is out of its mind excited to do this. It’s much more rare for cars to wag their tails but it means the same as it does when a dog does it. This cat is curious and proud and playing. It keeps looking at its owner too, like “LOOK AT ME, DAD” and it’s so rare to get videos of cats this happy. This is fucking rad

Nope.. wagging tails means anger or irritation in cat body language.

hey y’all, hope you don’t mind me stepping in!

you’re both right 🙂 a wagging tail means the cat is highly stimulated (think coiled spring, ready to go off). depending on the situation, this can be interpreted differently – just like people can smile nervously at job interviews vs. happily grin at friends.

in most cases, it’s safe to interpret overstimulation as ‘you’re doing something to amp up the cat & it wants you to stop’ (ex. unwanted petting). it should be seen as a warning; all that pent-up energy COULD be released as a swat or bite.

BUT in this case, that tail-wagging ‘frustration’ is the stimulation that comes from problem-solving (where can I jump? is it safe to go here?) and the excitement of play. it’s good to be wary of ‘cute’ animals vids, but this seems like an unproblematic video!

I’d like to add to this–just look at world-famous box-loving cat, Maru, who wags his tail every time he stuffs his body into a box or other small object. He’s clearly not about to attack the person behind the camera! It’s definitely based on stimulation, but more to the point of “ahhh FINALLY I’ve gotten into the small space, now how do I get the rest of me inside”:

i love everything about cats ever always
