That’s part of why we’ve been focusing on keeping our funding at crowdfunding and why we’re keeping ads restricted to user ads!
I’ve spoken to quite a few investors in 2018, and what I’ve learned from talking to them is that many of these alternative sites are built by entrepreneurs who are seeded with tons of money from rich relatives and are seeking a 10-year strategy to build up a company before selling it off. One of the primary things that I was told was that WritScrib should have an “exit strategy” where we sell ourselves to a bigger company so we can move on to start a new business venture.
A lot of these companies are built with the intent of selling it off to a bigger company and burning any bridges made with the userbase to get there. It’s an ugly part of working with advertisers, too: advertisers don’t want anything too controversial to be associated with them, as the negative PR comes back to bite them. This puts pressure on companies to restrict user content more in order to appeal to advertisers.
All of that being said: I’m not certain about the intent behind Twitch’s updated guidelines. They were having a pretty major issue with streamers who were deliberately using a larger webcam screen and revealing clothing to try and entice viewers, which was already skirting the line of their TOS, and they had a recent incident with a larger streamer openly mocking people who have anxiety/depression who started censoring his chat when they disagreed with him.
I would always recommend being wary of sites that have to cater to advertisers, though: remember that advertisers provide the bulk of their income, and are thus their most important customers. We’re making sure that our most important customers are our users.
And also? I really hate ads. I don’t want to force you guys to stare at some malware-encrusted ad trying to sell you some PC scanning tool. Because I don’t want to stare at it.
I don’t remember who it was but there was incident with a scumbag streamer that got a clearly drunk off her ass girl to join the video feed and then him and his fans talked her doing all kinds of explicit things on cam for them.
It might’ve been Keemstar come to think of it and even if it wasn’t on Twitch the fact it happened puts ALL the major streaming hosts under pressure to crack down.

In light of Twitch’s recently updated guidelines, I’ve become cautious of websites that pop up to be alternatives of larger, stricter websites. A lot of websites start out being lax, then become “family friendly” aka advertiser friendly garbage. I honestly trust that this won’t happen to writscrib, but still.”Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.” I really hope you guys stick to your guns no matter what.
