In a deep depression you decide to end your life. You don’t dare do it yourself so you hire an assassin to do it at random within a year. The following day you change your mind but can’t get a hold of the assassin.

Happy Valentine’s day *stab*

Mood

It’s two months until you know the contract you made has to be fulfilled. You hadn’t been sleeping properly this week, nervous about talking to one of your friends. The assassin thing didn’t help, but you’d gotten used to the fact that you were going to die sometime in the next two months. But today was Valentine’s day, and you were dedicated to finally admitting your feelings to your friend. You nervously sit on the bench in the park where you’re waiting for him, and fiddle with the bracelet you had on your wrist.

A couple minutes later, and here he comes. The two of you greet each other cheerfully before you fall silent. Your friend, ever the observant one, asks you what’s wrong. So you take a deep breath, and you square your shoulders, and you turn to face him.

“Th-this is probably gonna be weird, and I don’t want to put any pressure on you to respond, but… I love you. I’ve fallen in love with you. N-no pressure on you, like I said. I just… wanted to let you know before I die.” You freeze the moment the words are out of your mouth. You’d been so careful not to let any of your friends know what you’d done. And now you’d blurted it out. Your two biggest secrets, and your best friend and crush now knew both. The blank expression on his face made you cringe and hurry to explain.

“I… You know how I have depression right?” He hums in confirmation. “Well, almost a year ago… I was… having a bad day. A bad week.. Heh… Maybe it was a bad month, for all I remember. But that day was particularly bad. I wanted to die.” Your friends are not unaccustomed to your bad days, but none of them knew how bad it had gotten. “But… I just couldn’t do it myself. So I went online and… I went online and I hired an assassin.” You’re not looking at your friend now, instead looking out into the park. “They were to kill me within the next year… I’ve got two months left at maximum.”

Your gaze drops to the ground. “But… I changed my mind. The very next day I changed my mind, and I wanted to tell them not to, but I couldn’t get ahold of them, and now I’ve got a reason to live, because you’re in my life! and I… Oh, god, I shouldn’t have told you, because now you have to know that I love you and that I’m gonna die, and I didn’t want you to be pressured and…” You trail off when you feel his hand on your shoulder, and you turn to look at him, sorrow and defeat in your eyes.

But the look in his eyes makes you brighten up a little. The clarity and resolve in his eyes makes you feel those itty bitty butterflies in your tummy that you always felt when he was talking about something he was passionate about. “I’m glad you told me. It clears a few things up, and it makes my job a little easier. I will admit, I have grown quite attached to you, and killing you was going to be hard, but this just makes it easier.” You suck in a gasp of breath, watching that confident smile that you’d fallen in love with cross his face. A cheerful laugh escapes his lips and you can’t help but watch, even as you digest this new information.

You open your mouth to speak, but he cuts you off. “Now that I don’t have to kill you, it makes me much happier. I don’t have to contact my employer to tell them I can’t do it, and I don’t have to kill you or fake your death to fulfill my contract!” He leans forwards enthusiastically, and you can’t help but lean closer to him, your mind still reeling as he pulls you into a tight hug. Then, as he pulls away slightly, he kisses you, and your mind stops working for a moment, as you attempt to register even more new information. The short circuit in your mind lasts for barely a second before you’re kissing him back, and snaking your arms around his neck to keep him close.

When you both pull away, he’s laughing and peppering small kisses accross your face, and you’re staring at him in awe, wondering about how if you hadn’t decided one day, ten months ago, to kill yourself, then you wouldn’t have met this wonderful man.
