Last night when I watched Can Lying Be Good? I found myself getting used to Deceit. Like I actually found him funny and not scary, after he didn’t look like Patton obviously because like that is still too much. I am not a sympathizer and I never will be but god is he a great character. I just love him as a villain a lot because he’s such a dork, and his shtick is so great. Thomas is such a great actor.

“You foolish dummy!” is the best thing he has ever uttered so far.

patton deceit is the most terrifying and unstoppable force to ever be encountered because like i thought he was patton??? but he’s my smol boi??? panice? tears? fearr? and then when logan was about to say deceit and he did the thing??? sorry i’m just weird

I hate that part so much. It still makes me feel really shakey and nauseous. Patton is so calming to me and seeing “him” portrayed like that is so scary. Thomas is an excellent actor.

Seriously, having to portray a character acting as another character is like??? Amazing??? Because when I went back and watched it, there are tiny little things that Pat wouldn’t do or something was over acted like it was someone doing an impression that I didn’t notice the first time around. It’s seriously mind blowing.

Even watching it the first time, you just know something is off about Patton.

I just thought he was having a bad day honestly.

I guess, but I think the part where he talked about the hamster being…in a better place was the biggest tip off because the real Patton would never come up with that type of situation. He’d also get really emotional.

I KNOW! During my first walkthrough I was like ??? Is he good?

I also loved when Patton came in and politely told Deceit to get out of his spot.

He’s too nice. What a good boy.

I’m just gonna add: that little wave after Deceit sank down?!?
Like-that just melted my heart.

So pure. So confused.

Idk, I think Pat was feigning innocence in the last bit. I feel like Dee is actually intimidated by Pat, but I can’t exactly place why. But otherwise, why would Dee sink out so quickly once Patton showed up?

It’s because he knows he has no power when Patton is there. No one gives Patton enough credit. He is literally the leader. If Patton was there from the start none of that stage stuff would have happened, they wouldn’t have even looked at lying as an option, because he would have instantly shut it down. That is why Deceit chose to be him above all the others. He knew they would listen to him. He knew they trust his input the most since Thomas is a very morally driven person.

Long analysis incoming….

What I love about Thomas is that he’s very very good at nuanced acting. Each side has little things they do or ways they say things that just make them come to life and we don’t initially think about those things but they really matter in the long run and that’s how I know he’s meant for the stage.

Logan gestures with his hands and shoulders and body language and face in very specific ways. His movements are crisp and purposeful from every head tilt ans eyebrow raise. He talks in a broad and concise way and his words are crisp and articulate.

Virgil always gestures with his hands in specific closed off, close to the body ways. He tilts his head and smiles crookedly and his eyes are an extremely expressive part of his character considering how mild-mannered he is most of the time. He speaks in a deeper tone than the others ans drags out his words sometimes for emphasis.

Roman is grand and enunciated everything in a large fashion. He often rolls his Rs and every bit of his body is used to express himself from his expressive face to his quick turns and rapid arm movements. Hea so full of energy and life and every move he makes is done so with the clear intent to know that he is the best in the room and deserves the spotlight. Its not just that he looks like the Prince, he is the Prince and we know it immediately in every charming grin ans head tilt.

This is why it’s so important that each character has their own behaviours because we notice when something is off and even life we don’t think about it. From the moment “Patton” first appears in screen we know something is wrong but we’re comfortable with Patton, Patton is safe, is nice, is a little spacy and can be goofy but we LOVE Patton and that’s why he was THE BEST CHOICE they could have made to disguise deceit. Not only does it allow for Deceit to take the wheel as the leader in this “moral dilemma” decision making, but it completely overrules Thomas’s real morality which never would have happened if he hadn’t been so good at disguise.

However we still notice the little inconsistencies and so does Virgil who is basically programmed to over-analyse EVERYTHING (but I’ll get back to that in a moment). 

Patton is charming and giddy, expressive with his hands usually by his face and he is always downright cute. He does cute movements with his shoulders and gets excited over every little thing. Thomas rarely frowns as Patton and if he does frown it;s always an immediate red flag for us. His voice is a little comical sometimes and almost a little cartoonish, and he always has a dad joke to give but he’s never ever really detrimental to himself. He doesn’t make fun of himself and most importantly he is a little naive.

When we are exposed to “Patton” he is unsettling not just because lying is opposite to morality, but in the small subtle things he does. First off he just appears immediately which is the first huge red flag because he’s never done that. Then his “Who has ten fingers ans is confused, this guy” is a little odd but Patton can be odd right? What seals that it’s uncomfortable is when he says “I’m silly like that”. Because Patton doesn’t really know that he’s silly, nor does he ever really refer to himself negatively. He doesn’t know when he’s being insulted and he doesn’t ever remember what adultery means.

That one simple line is so quick and seems so in character but is just so wrong. We see him not be so excited through the whole thing actually but deceit is very fucking clever and we know this because even if “Patton” seems a little off He still says things and does things deliberately Patton-like to fool us. He shrugs his shoulders but it;s not the same kind of excited wiggling Patton normally does. We see him referencing cartoons, talking about babies coming from messenger falcons etc. but he’s still not Patton and he even kind of looks at his hand as if he;s checking written notes about whether or not he likes cartoons. 

Little subtle things just subtle enough to not be overt, but also just enough not go completely unnoticed.

That’s why were so angry and upset when he drops the facade. “Bravo Thomas you’re so mature.” Patton is NEVER sarcastic. 

IMMEDIATELY all the little things wrong that have been ticking in our heads fall into place. The movements that are less exuberant, the way he pronounces things now seems more condescending, the insistence at being director where Patton would most likely never have cared before, the self-depreciating awareness, the in-depth knowledge of lying, all of it hits you like a brick and then he does the nasty sharp movement of his arm and silences Logan. 

This moment is to me, more horrifying than his snarky remark because Logan might be stuffy sometimes but he’s reason and knowledge and we trust Logan. We trust the others but we know they tend to generally have their opinions ruled heavily in emotions so while Logan’s logic might be faulty sometimes he is the most easy to get back on track to the tasks and problems at hand and he always has Thomas’s well-being in mind. Roman’s judgments get clouded by his desires, Patton’s heart is finicky and Virgil’s perceptions are clouded by fear. Logan, though logic can be off the wall or unsound, is typically the most grounded and reliable, thus shutting him up is immediately horrifying.

Also “Patton” had said he’s everyone’s favourite character and that just shows that it was a deliberate and cruel lie when he shuts him up without caring. We feel betrayed watching this because how could Patton do this? But we already suspect it’s not Patton from the subtleties so we’re furious by the time Roman says “oh I get it now”.

Virgil has been suspicious the whole time but what does deceit do? He caters to Roman because he knows Roman and Virgil have a history of bickering so taking them to the stage, what is the one thing Roman is going to do to hog the spotlight? Keep Virgil busy in one of the hardest tasks back stage: being sound tech and lighting (each of those by the way is a monstrous chore on its own, I would know). With Virgil busy “Patton”, not disturbed by any of this, is enjoying the display in front of him of everything deceit meant to be. On top of that, they’re acting on a stages another form of lying. Virgil being so busy means he can’t question and they’re left up to Roman and Logan to literally seal the deal on how best to lie to Joan. Deceit doesn’t have to do anything at this point but get Logan to explain and have them run through until it’s a perfect lie.

This is why at the end he tries so hard because Patton is till shining through and making the others and Thomas uncomfortable with all the lying, even if he’s not physically present. He’s a huge part of Thomas’s personality. 

When Thomas finally gives them permission to tell him the truth and deceit is revealed we’re not angry that we fell for it but that we knew the signs were there and that the puzzle pieces fit so perfectly into place.

THAT is what impresses me most, because the writing and Thomas’s acting is so subtle and so wonderful and well-thought-out that he really brings these characters to life and gives them such personality.
